A fleece jacket had been left for some needy street person. Over the course of the day, people picked it from the table, held it up for size and set it back again---but not before subtly checking the pockets.
Do handouts weaken initiative? Is it true as I heard someone say, they'll walk two miles for a free bus card but not a block to put in a job application?
The bus card is now. It is certain. It represents mobility, freedom.
The job application is future. It is a maybe, more likely, a rejection based on the past. It represents commitment, complication, restraint.
I do not think like a person who has nothing. It does not occur to me to look a gift jacket in the pockets.
